the name

We haven't had too many questions about our name or where it came from or what it means.  We just have a lot of people tell us that they like it, it's unique and then they get distracted by how sweet he is.  But, I wanted to give the background story on how this name came about.

In 2003, my fiance (at the time) and I started watching the show The OC.  For me, it was like a soap opera at night and for my fiance it was like watching 90210 again.  We were hooked from day one.  We watched all 4 seasons (ending in 2007) and watched every single episode (all 92 of them).  We were so bummed when they took it off the air, but it was really for the best since the story lines were starting to get a little nutty.  Nutty it was, but we still loved every second of it.

So, in 2007 The OC ends and we're bummed.  A year or so passes and we notice that it's on the Soap Network playing reruns and not just reruns but the ENTIRE series over.  So we couldn't help be DVR the entire series again.

We loved the story, we loved the characters and because there were 4 seasons, there were plenty of episodes that we couldn't remember, so we watched them again.  We actually watched The OC reruns 2 times, which means we watched the entire series at least 3 times and we still catch them from time to time and get  hooked again.

So, what does this have to do with Coen?

Well, if you watched The OC, then this face should look familiar.

Little Seth Cohen.

For those that don't know, he was one of the main character's of The OC and they would always call him by his last name, Cohen.

When we were deciding on a name, LONG before we were ever pregnant, we knew it was going to be a challenge to find a name that we would both like but that would also be approve by my husband.  If you remember correctly, he's a teacher and you probably know what I'm going to say next... every name that came out of my mouth, he hated based on a student he's had... both good and bad. So our names had to be unique and a little off the radar.

We tossed around a thousand names and to this day, we really only have 1 girl name and Coen.  We had some others but those have been sent out the window, now.  We're going to have to go back to the drawing board if we have another boy.

Anyway, so Cohen came up in our discussion and it was the first name that I said allowed and we both were in love.

Now, after a crazy number of hours researching the name Cohen, we decided that it was in our best interest to use the first name spelling verses the surname spelling which is how we got the name Coen.  I'm not going to lie though... the day that we decided it was best to use the first name spelling verses the surname spelling wasn't a good day in the Hopefuls household.  I was an emotional mess and at first, I didn't even want to talk about the idea.  It was locked in my head that it would've been spelled with the "h".  I didn't want to listen, I didn't want to talk about it, I didn't care about the meaning, I just wanted it that way, period.

I soon got over the emotional part, thought about it and well... never looked back.  And, like any mom will say, now that he's here, I couldn't imagine it any other way.  His name is perfect for him and he's perfect!  His name, Coen, is German and means "brave advisor".

His middle name was easy, it's a family name that has been passed down to several family members on my husband's side of the family.

So, that's how it all came to be and we just love his name.  Our little Coen Thomas...

I LOVE that you named him after Seth Cohen!!! Seriously, best character on television ever. I re-watched the entire OC series when I was on maternity leave with Annie.

I love Coen's name and this story made me laugh because the first time I read it I immediately thought of Seth Cohen. Love him!

Love it! Such a funny origin story in some ways but it's such a unique name; it's perfect for him. I totally understand where your husband is coming from. I have list of "no's" myself and a story to go with each one of them. :) Also, so great to hear that breastfeeding is going well now that you are back at work! It's amazing how the body knows. I'm sure you will be an inspiration for other mom's. If you ever end up having a surplus you should donate to our local milk bank :)

I love names with great meaning behind them. I'm horrible when it comes to picking names because they have to have a good meaning...nothing like "stream". ;)

I LOVE that photo of your belly and his name too. Perfection.
thanks for sharing...i always love to hear the origins of baby names, and i also had an obsession with the oc for a while (maybe a LONG while!) :) Your little guy is super cute!

that nightmare

Time is passing and permanent/next step decisions AREN'T being made about where our marriage is going.

Not because of anything other than HOPE....

Hope that these changes are real.  I can't deal with an act anymore.  I'm done with those fake attempts.  It just won't work for me.  I can't.

Hope that he really wants to change.  Because he's the only one that can make that decision for himself and not anyone else.

Hope that a new normal is really a possible option.  And not just a glimmer of something that will eventually be shattered and destroyed.

Hope that we could work through all of this and actually land on our feet.  But he has to want to do those things and my guidance won't help him.  He's got to want to do them on his own.  I can't help or ask or guide.  He has to do it.  Alone and with the help of God.

Hope that the narcissistic behaviors are being dealt with in positive ways and won't resurface.  With the help of prayer, guidance from h…

my little model...

There is a blog that I follow of a photographer that I saw at the Delaware County Fair. Her studio is near my home town and her pictures are very vibrant. I enjoy looking at different aspects of photography and I like seeing how didn’t people capture pictures and scenes… I guess you could say I’m envious.

While following her blog, I saw a post that stated Calling All Furry Friends and immediately responded. I have always wanted to have Toby get professional pictures done but I just fear that I wouldn’t pick the right person to capture his personality.

Anyway, as you can read in the link above, there were a handful of photographers at Megan Morgan’s studio and they were all going to be there just to take furry friends pictures.

Of the people that were there two have uploaded their pictures and Toby is in them!

First, Megan Morgan’s blog: Weekend Workshop

Then, Holly McCaig’s blog: Dogs Everywhere

They all captured some great pictures and I can’t wait to get my hands on them so that I …

Starting here..

I know that I haven't really updated this in a long while. I apologize. In the moments it was hard enough to survive, let alone write about it or find time to write about it.

With that said, I've told people over and over again that I'm going to write again, just not sure where to start.
So, today, I'm starting here.
My mom is terminal.
Words that I cannot believe have to leave my mouth or my fingers.
She's been battling Ovarian Cancer for well over 10 years and this last year or 8 months+ have been just the worst.  Her body is being consumed by cancer and with every day that passes we are just another closer to losing her.
She's fought this whole time and continues to beat the odds that the doctors have placed before her. She's set goals and surpassed them and when the doctors say something, it's like she mentally tells herself that it's just NOT going to happen and she flies by those measurable items.
She's been a rock star and I have known …
